Our Spirit continues to work while our Physical Body rests

By Stacie Frost

At this week’s Divine Service, I wanted to share a message that has brought comfort to many people throughout my own spiritual journey. It is a reminder that no matter what challenges we face, no matter how isolated we may feel, we are never truly alone.

We Are Spirit Before Anything Else

Peter spoke beautifully about the spirit of God living within each of us, and I wholeheartedly believe that. We are not simply physical beings experiencing life. At our very core, we are spiritual beings, connected to the Divine Source and to one another.

Life, however, can make us forget that truth. Families become separated. Relationships break down. Loved ones move away, become estranged, or pass into the Spirit World. Each of these experiences leaves its own kind of grief. Whether the separation is physical, emotional or through death, the feeling of loss is very real.

Yet Spiritualism teaches us that these connections are never truly broken. Spirit continues beyond physical life, and our souls remain connected even when our earthly relationships become strained.

The Soul’s Journey During Sleep

One of the comforting ideas within Spiritualism is that our spirit continues to work while our physical body rests. During deep sleep, our consciousness is no longer distracted by the demands of everyday life. We become freer to connect on a spiritual level.

This may explain why we sometimes wake with answers to problems that seemed impossible the night before, or why a sense of peace replaces anxiety after a night’s sleep. Many Spiritualists believe that during these moments our spirit communicates on the astral plane, not only with loved ones in Spirit but also with members of our soul group.

Although we may not consciously remember these encounters, they can leave us feeling calmer, wiser and more at peace.

Every Soul Has a Purpose

Before we come into this earthly life, many Spiritualists believe our soul chooses experiences that will help us grow. Alongside us travel other souls who support our development, sometimes through love and encouragement, and sometimes by presenting us with difficult challenges.

Not every person who enters our life is there simply to make us happy. Some become catalysts for our spiritual growth.

When we begin to see life through this wider perspective, painful experiences can take on new meaning. Difficult relationships may become opportunities to develop patience, compassion, forgiveness or self-worth.

Our Higher Self Always Knows

While our physical mind can become overwhelmed, our higher self remains connected to the Divine Source. It carries a greater understanding of our life’s purpose and gently guides us through intuition, meaningful coincidences, conversations, moments of quiet reflection and spiritual experiences.

The answers we seek do not always arrive immediately, but they often come exactly when we are ready to receive them.

When we begin to trust this guidance, our relationships improve because we recognise that everyone we meet reflects something back to us. Each encounter offers an opportunity to understand ourselves more deeply.

Letting Go of What No Longer Serves Us

Many of us spend our lives carrying unnecessary burdens. Guilt, resentment, regret and painful memories become emotional weights that gradually affect our wellbeing.

Equally, modern society often encourages us to measure our worth through possessions, appearance or financial success. We are told we need more in order to be happy, yet constantly chasing these things often leaves us feeling emptier.

Spirit reminds us that love, kindness and authentic connection are far more valuable than material possessions.

This does not mean our practical needs are unimportant, but it does encourage us to examine what truly enriches our lives. Sometimes the greatest freedom comes from releasing what no longer serves our spiritual growth, whether that is emotional baggage, unhealthy relationships or unrealistic expectations.

Remember Your Own Worth

One of the most important spiritual lessons is learning to love ourselves.

We are often far kinder to others than we are to ourselves. We criticise our appearance, our achievements and our mistakes, forgetting that we are all learning.

Spirit does not ask for perfection. Spirit asks for growth.

If we can honestly say, “I am doing my best. I am learning. I am trying to become a better person,” then we are already walking a meaningful spiritual path.

Every act of kindness towards ourselves strengthens the loving energy we share with the world.

The Energy We Carry

Our thoughts and emotions shape the energy we carry through life. When we repeatedly dwell on hurt, anger or guilt, we reinforce those patterns within ourselves. Conversely, when we practise forgiveness, gratitude and compassion, we naturally radiate a lighter and more peaceful energy.

Most of us have experienced people whose presence immediately brings calm, even before they speak. Likewise, we may sense when someone carries unresolved anger or bitterness.

The energy we nurture within ourselves inevitably influences those around us.

Nothing Is Ever Wasted

Perhaps the greatest comfort Spiritualism offers is that nothing in our lives is ever wasted.

Every challenge, every joy, every relationship and every loss contributes to the growth of the soul. Those we have loved remain connected with us, and every experience becomes part of our spiritual evolution.

Whether you believe in reincarnation or see this life as your only earthly journey, it is surely too precious to spend consumed by fear, resentment or regret.

The Creator, God, Divine Source, however you understand that higher power, remains with us always.

We are part of something infinitely greater than ourselves.

We are never truly alone.

May we each remember our connection with Spirit, treat ourselves with greater compassion, and allow love to guide us through whatever life brings. When we work with Spirit rather than against it, we open ourselves to the peace, wisdom and healing that have been with us all along.
