During our recent service, we reflected on the relationship between our inner spiritual nature and our outer human life, and how this connection draws us closer to God through the presence of the Holy Spirit.
Each of us carries within us both an outer self — the person who moves through daily life — and an inner spiritual being that is deeply connected with the divine. Too often, the noise and demands of the outer world drown out the quiet voice of that inner spirit. Yet it is precisely through this inner awareness that we find wisdom, guidance, and communion with God.
The teachings of Jesus remind us that love and obedience to divine guidance open the door to spiritual help. In the Gospel of John we hear these words:
“If you love me, keep my commands. And I will ask the Father, and he will give you another counsellor to help you and be with you forever — the Spirit of truth.” (John 14:15–17)
This promise reminds us that we are never alone. The Spirit of truth is always present, guiding those who are willing to listen.
From Neighbour to Brotherhood
For centuries we have spoken of loving our neighbour, echoing the commandment given through Jesus. Yet as humanity continues to grow spiritually, perhaps we are being invited to go even further — to rediscover the deeper idea of brotherhood and sisterhood.
Since the earliest stories in Genesis, humanity has been described as one family. Somewhere along the path of history we have lost sight of this truth. The spiritual journey invites us to rediscover it — to remember that every person is part of the same spiritual family.
This is not always easy. Human differences, divisions, and misunderstandings can make it feel impossible. Yet spiritual wisdom reminds us that healing these divisions begins with a change in attitude and consciousness.
Wisdom Beyond Human Understanding
In the book of Acts we read how the early followers of Christ were filled with the Holy Spirit. This moment symbolises something powerful: the awakening of spiritual understanding that goes beyond ordinary human thinking.
The Spirit brings gifts such as wisdom, compassion, discernment, and the ability to act with kindness and courage — like the Good Samaritan who helped a stranger in need.
The apostle Paul speaks deeply about this spiritual wisdom in 1 Corinthians 2:6–14, reminding us that the wisdom of God is very different from the wisdom of the world:
“What no eye has seen, what no ear has heard, and what no human mind has conceived — the things God has prepared for those who love him.”
These truths cannot always be grasped through logic or intellect alone. They are understood through the spirit within us.
Listening to the Inner Spirit
Paul explains that the Spirit searches even the deep things of God. Just as each person understands their own thoughts through the spirit within them, so too the Spirit of God reveals divine truths to those who are open to receive them.
This spiritual insight cannot be forced or manufactured. It grows through reflection, prayer, meditation, and openness to divine guidance.
When we quiet the outer world and listen inwardly, we begin to perceive spiritual realities that once seemed hidden. The wisdom of the Spirit then begins to shape our lives, guiding our decisions and helping us respond to the needs of others with compassion.
A Journey of Spiritual Discovery
Our spiritual journey is not about collecting information or mastering religious ideas. It is about awakening to the divine presence within us.
The more we seek, the more we begin to understand why we are here — to grow in love, to help one another, and to live in harmony with the Spirit of God.
The invitation is simple but profound:
to listen, to seek, and to allow the wisdom of the Spirit to guide our lives.
