Within Christian Spiritualism, art has a uniquely important place because of its ability to uplift the spirit, encourage meditation and remind us of God’s continuing presence in our lives. At Thundersley Christian Spiritualist Church, the artwork displayed and used throughout our church has been carefully chosen to support worship, healing and spiritual development.
Art as a Spiritual Language
Christian Spiritualism teaches us that God is Spirit and that each of us is an eternal soul. Throughout history, artists have sought to express spiritual truths that cannot always be captured in words. A painting can inspire hope, a sculpture can encourage quiet reflection, and a simple image can remind us that we are never alone.
Unlike objects of worship, sacred artwork lives in the periphery and serves as a visual aid that helps direct our thoughts towards God, the teachings of Christ, the angelic realms and the continuing life of the spirit.
Each visitor may experience a piece of art differently. One person may find comfort, another inspiration, while someone else simply appreciates the craftsmanship. That diversity of experience reflects the deeply personal nature of spirituality itself.
Christ at 33
One of the most recognisable images within our church is the painting Christ at 33, displayed prominently on our rostrum, as shown each week on our Online Spiritualist Church Service.
This powerful depiction of Jesus reminds us that Christ remains at the very heart of Christian Spiritualism. Our services, philosophy and healing ministry are founded upon His teachings of love, compassion, forgiveness and service to others.
Positioned where it overlooks our congregation, the painting serves as a continual reminder that Christ is the example we strive to follow. Whether people are attending a Divine Service, a demonstration of mediumship or a healing service, His presence remains central to everything we do.
The Four Seasons by Brenda Treadgold
Throughout our church are four original paintings by Brenda Treadgold, each representing one of the four seasons. These unique works beautifully illustrate the continual cycle of life.
Within Christian Spiritualism, these changing seasons mirror our own spiritual journey. Just as nature continually renews itself, we believe the soul continues to grow and progress beyond physical life.
These paintings help create an environment where we can quietly reflect upon their own journey through life’s changing seasons.

White Feather by John Hurley
We are also privileged to display an original drawing by popular local artist John Hurley, depicting his spirit guide, White Feather.
Psychic art occupies a fascinating place within Spiritualism. Artists such as John Hurley portray spirit guides and spiritual experiences as they perceive them through their psychic sensitivity.
Whether viewed as an artistic interpretation or as an expression of spiritual perception, works such as these encourage us to consider the reality of the unseen world and the companionship of those in the spirit world who continue to guide and inspire us.

Angels in Our Healing Room
The Healing Room is intentionally designed to provide a calm and peaceful atmosphere.
Alongside charts that represent the chakras, there is a copy of an angel painting by fantasy artist Ann Stokes. While Ann Stokes is not a Spiritualist artist, her angelic imagery conveys themes of protection, hope, compassion and divine love that many people find comforting during healing.
The artwork helps create a tranquil environment where those seeking spiritual healing can relax, reflect and open themselves to God’s healing power.
Statues of Angels and Mother Mary
Visitors will also notice statues of angels and of Mother Mary within the church.
Angels have long been recognised throughout the Bible as God’s messengers, bringing guidance, comfort and protection. Their presence within Christian art reminds us that God’s love is continually at work in the world.
The statue of Mary reflects respect for the mother of Jesus and her enduring example of humility, faith and devotion. While Christian Spiritualists worship God alone, we can still appreciate the lives and examples of those whose faith has inspired generations of Christians.
These statues are not objects of worship. Rather, they are visual reminders of the spiritual values we seek to cultivate in our own lives.
Psychic Art Within Spiritualism
One of the more unusual forms of art associated with Spiritualism is psychic art.
At some demonstrations and special events, mediums create drawings inspired by their psychic or mediumistic impressions. These artworks often portray spirit communicators, spirit guides or symbolic images that carry meaning for members of the congregation.
Psychic art differs from conventional portraiture because the artist is attempting to express impressions received intuitively rather than from direct observation.
Psychic artists have been part of the Spiritualist movement for well over a century and continue to demonstrate their abilities at churches, centres and special events across the UK.
A Place Where Faith and Creativity Meet
Being surrounded by the art in church can inspire hope, encourage prayer, bring comfort during difficult times and remind us of the beauty of God’s creation.
But so too can creating art, which is the focus at some of our special events including our arts and craft days where we come together to create different pieces of art, together.
Art has the power to heal, and spending time side-by-side creating something new can be extremely powerful.
Preserving Art for Future Generations
We believe that spiritual artwork forms an important part of our church’s heritage and future legacy to the christian spiritualist movement. Original paintings, carefully chosen prints and meaningful sculptures contribute to the welcoming atmosphere that so many people comment upon.
These pieces, and others in our archive, tell our story as a church. They remind us of our beliefs, inspire quiet reflection and connect today’s congregation with the generations who have worshipped before us.
As our church continues to grow, we hope to expand and preserve this collection, ensuring that future generations can continue to enjoy artwork that uplifts the soul and points hearts towards God.
